Dreaming in Somali
DREAMING IN SOMALI is a collaborative documentary between the filmmakers and Somali-American women in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. The film follows these determined women in their daily lives while they advocate for fundamental change. As New Americans, the women navigate complex issues around their identities and their place as leaders in politics, policing, education, mental health, and nonprofit organizations. The participants provide insight into how the prevalent idea of “Minnesota Nice” neglects the lived experiences of many within the largest Somali community in the country who face racism, Islamophobia, economic inequality, and daily microaggressions. Woven together with these threads, the film celebrates Somalis’ renowned poetic tradition through performances by local female poets.
