Sister Koochie Koo
Sister Koochie Koo became the first CIS woman to join the Orlando Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in 2011. One of the first groups to advocate for people with HIV/AIDS in the early 1980s, The Sisters have grown into an international nonprofit network of orders committed to community service, LGBTQ activism, charitable fundraising, education, and spreading joy. Like many organizations, the Orlando Sisters lost members and momentum during COVID going from over twenty-five active members down to eight. Sister Koochie Koo, a self-proclaimed “power nun,” states her mission is to inspire others to get involved, fight for LGBTQ+ rights and social justice, and build the order back to its pre-COVID strength. On her fourteenth anniversary as Sister Koochie Koo, she affirms, “may we help lift spirits, squash fascism, and continue to be so weird, you’ll always do a double take.”
